What makes a good emergency fund?
3–6 months of essential expenses
Not total spending — essential expenses only. Rent/mortgage, food, utilities, insurance, and minimum debt payments. This is the number that matters in a real emergency.
Liquid and accessible
Your emergency fund should be in cash or a high-yield savings account — not investments. You need to be able to access it within 1–2 business days without selling anything.
Separate from your checking
Keeping it in a dedicated account — ideally at a different institution — reduces the temptation to use it for non-emergencies and makes the balance visible and intentional.
Replenish after use
An emergency fund is a revolving resource. After you use it, rebuilding it becomes the top financial priority — before resuming investing or paying down extra debt.
